February is a busy month here at Dog Tired! Since Fat Tuesday falls right in the middle of our Valentine's Day Pawty this year, we decided to celebrate a week early since the whole point of Mardi Gras is to fill up on yummy foods as you can. This way everyone has plenty of time to eat pancakes, King Cake, AND Valentine's Day candy! Be sure to check out our Facebook to stay up-to-date on all the details for our Mardi Gras Pancake Pawty.
Do you know the history behind the tradition of eating pancakes on Mardi Gras? Fat Tuesday (also know as Mardi Gras in French) is the last celebratory day before the 40 day fasting of Lent begins. Since pancakes are rich in eggs, milk, and sugar, they are the perfect fatty food to stuff yourself with before the traditional fasting begins.
We are doing our own version of dog-friendly pancakes this Tuesday and Wednesday as our Mardi Gras celebration. This pawty is free for our Daycare and Boarding Members* and is just $2 for everyone else. Be sure to schedule your reservation today since we have limited availability!
If you would like to make your own doggy pancakes at home, this is similar the recipe we will be using:
Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes
Ingredients
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup old-fashioned oats
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (make sure it is xylitol free!)
1/2 cup mashed banana
2 large eggs
1/2 cup water
Instructions
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly oil a mini muffin/cupcake tin.
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, old-fashioned oats, and baking powder.
In the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, cream together peanut butter and mashed banana. Mix in eggs.
Mix in flour mixture, alternating with water, until just combined.
Fill mini muffin tin cavities about 3/4 of the way with batter.
Bake for 6-8 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the middle of a cupcake comes out clean.
Let cool in tin for a few minutes before moving to wire racks to cool completely.
We can personally attest to how delicious these pancakes are... They are people friendly too! Do you do anything special to celebrate Mardi Gras? If so, tell us in the comments. We are always looking for new, fun ways to celebrate with our pups!
